Operator (OP) permissions give you full control over your Minecraft server. This includes access to admin commands, player management, and server configuration.
Applies to: Minecraft Java servers
What is OP?
OP (Operator) is a permission level that allows a player to perform administrative actions on the server.
- Run server commands
- Change game modes
- Manage players (ban, kick, whitelist)
- Control server settings
Method 1: Using the Console (Recommended)
This is the easiest and most reliable way to give yourself OP.
- Log into your HostByte Game Panel
- Select your Minecraft server
- Open the Console tab
- Enter the following command:
/op YourUsername
- Press Enter
You will receive a confirmation message once successful.
Method 2: In-Game Command
If you already have permission to run commands:
- Join your server
- Open chat (press T)
- Enter:
/op YourUsername
This method will only work if you already have sufficient permissions.
How to Check if You Are OP
- Run a command such as
/gamemode creative - If it works, you have operator permissions
⚠️ Important Warning
Warning: Only give OP permissions to trusted players. Operators have full control over your server and can modify or delete world data.
How to Remove OP
To remove operator permissions:
/deop YourUsername
This change applies immediately.
Common Issues
- Command not working: Make sure you are using the console or already have permissions
- Incorrect username: Check spelling and capitalization
- Server offline: Ensure your server is running
Where OP Permissions Are Stored
Operator data is stored in the following file:
ops.json
This file can be accessed through the File Manager.
Best Practices
- Only give OP to trusted players
- Remove OP from inactive users
- Avoid giving OP to all players
- Use permission plugins (such as LuckPerms) for advanced setups
