How to Start and Join Your Garry's Mod Server

This guide shows you how to start your Garry's Mod server and connect to it using multiple methods, including direct connect and the in-game console.

Step 1: Start Your Server

1. Log in to your HostByte Game Panel
2. Select your Garry's Mod server
3. Click Manage
4. Press the Start button
5. Wait for the server to fully load

Tip: You can monitor the startup process in the console. The server is ready when loading messages stop and no errors appear.

Step 2: Find Your Server IP and Port

1. In your panel, go to Server Details
2. Locate your IP Address and Port

123.45.67.89:27015

You will need this to connect to your server.

Step 3: Join via Server Browser (Favorites)

1. Open Garry's Mod
2. Click Find Multiplayer Game
3. Go to the Favorites tab
4. Click Add a Server
5. Paste your server IP and click Add
6. Select the server and click Join Server

Note: It may take a few minutes for a newly started server to appear.

Step 4: Join Using Direct Connect (Console Method)

You can connect instantly using the in-game console.

1. Open Garry's Mod
2. Press the ~ (tilde) key to open the console
3. Type the following command:

connect 123.45.67.89:27015

4. Press Enter to connect

Tip: This is the fastest way to join your server and works even if it does not appear in the server browser.

Step 5: Join via Steam (Optional)

1. Open Steam
2. Go to View → Game Servers
3. Click the Favorites tab
4. Add your server IP
5. Join directly from Steam

Troubleshooting

Server Not Starting

• Check the console for errors
• Ensure installation has completed
• Try restarting the server

Cannot Connect to Server

• Verify the IP and port are correct
• Ensure the server is running
• Wait a few minutes after startup

Server Not Showing in Browser

• Use the console connect method instead
• Wait for the server to fully load
• Check for configuration issues
